There are a lot of ingredients:
- 5 cups old fashioned oatmeal
- 1 cup coconut
- 1 cup wheat germ
- 1/2 cup sunflower seeds
- 3/4 cup sliced almonds (I used my leftover almonds, but the recipe says you can also use walnuts or pecans or a combination, which sounds even more wonderful.)
- 1 cup powdered milk
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup raisins
- 1/2 cup margarine (I only have butter.)
- 1/2 cup honey (When I was grocery shopping I saw creamed honey. WOW-That brought back memories, because creamed honey only existed at Aunt Betty's house. I bought it for old times sake.)
- 1 t salt
- 1 t vanilla
- 1/4 cup water
Combine all the dry ingredients in a 9x13 pan. My 9x13 pan still has the B-T-S cake in it, so I used the next size down.
In a 2-cup measure, melt butter. Next I melted my creamed honey. Add the honey, salt, vanilla, and water to the butter and mix thoroughly. Pour this over the oatmeal mixture.
Mix the liquid ingredients thoroughly with the dry ingredients. OK, I don't think this would have worked even in a 9x13 pan. It was just too crowded. I poured it all into a huge bowl, mixed thoroughly, then put it back in the pan.
Cook 4 minutes...
Well, they sure don't make microwaves like they used to. The smaller-than-9x13 pan didn't come close to fitting. So, I poured it all back into the bowl again, put it in the microwave, and set the time to cook 4 minutes.
...& stir. So far, so good.
Cook 4 more minutes or until evenly brown. Total time should be about 12 minutes.
I'm missing 4 minutes, so I microwaved it another 4, which gave me time to do my daily sourdough starter feeding. (That's a lie - I'm only doing it every other day. But it's doing fine.)
Cool on 2 cookie sheets. I only have one since the Green Tomato Pie incident, but it's a large one.
This granola is fantastic. I'm sure this is the recipe my Mom used to make when I was a kid, too.
