This recipe from Alice J Cross is both simple and delicious.
4 cup sliced apple
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 t cinnamon
1/2 cup coarsely chopped nuts
1 c cup flour
1 cup sugar
1 t baking powder
1/4 t salt
1 beaten egg
1/2 cup half & half
1/2 cup melted butter
Spread sliced apples in a greased 9" square pan. Combine 1/2 cup sugar, cinnamon & nuts; sprinkle over apples. Combine flour, 1 cup sugar, baking powder and salt; set aside. Combine beaten egg, half & half, and melted butter. Mix well and add to flour mixture. Beat until smooth and pour over apples. (This was a thick batter, so it wasn't so much pour as spread.) Sprinkle with finely chopped nuts (I sprinkled with the same coarsely chopped nuts in addition to the 1/2 cup already added.) and bake at 325 for one hour.
Simple. Except after half hour I noticed that the oven was set to broil, not bake. YIKES! I switched to bake and put foil over the already browned top. I had to cook for an additional 15 minutes or so.
