This recipe is from Karen Cross (David's wife). It was puzzling.
3 cup flour
1/3 cup cocoa
1 t salt
3/4 cup salad oil
2 cup sugar
2 t soda
2 T vinegar
2 cup water
1 t vanilla
"Mix in 9x13 pan." Good! No extra dishes.
"Sift dry ingredients together into pan, level off. Make 3 wells and put vinegar in first, salad oil in second, and vanilla in third well." As I was pondering how big to make the wells to hold a range of 1 t to 3/4 cup of liquid, I realized that I had missed the sugar as a dry ingredient. OOPS! I added that and sifted it in with the rest. Then I made the wells and filled them as directed.
And I only had balsamic vinegar, so I took a chance to see how that would work in a chocolate cake.
"Add water and mix with fork." Good enough. But I was thinking that my mixer or even a whisk would do a much better job than a fork to get the lumps out.
"Do not beat. Mix well." I mixed it well, but I don't know if I crossed the line into beating or not.
"Bake 30-35 minutes at 325 degrees.

It turned out fine, but now I realize it should be frosted. I'll solve that problem later.
